Your First Fandom

So my comments on how Homestuck seemed to have an epidemic of "first fandom" members got me to thinking I could make a post about first fandom experiences here. Seems like there should be more discussion here and I'm pretty new to Dreamwidth, figured this would be a nice ice breaker for me.

Exactly as the title says! What was your first fandom? What sort of experience did you have, as embarrassing as it may be? We all have to start somewhere.

My first fandom experiences were writing mass-crossover "who would beat who in a fight" type fanfiction, in script format. I was less than 10 years old, so now I find it kind of cute. Especially that, when I think about it, now all I do is write "who would fuck who" role plays. I don't think my maturity level has increased much.

I would say my first fandom-like thing was when I (unknowingly at the time) wrote a Hamtaro fan fiction when I was a wee baby Sykriar. It was cute. I think I still have it somewhere.

To be honest I really dove head-first into fandom with Dragon Age way back last year when I made a Tumblr for the second time. I knew what fandom was before it, but I always thought I never really had the time or the "skill" (as there were so many artists in fandom I thought) to participate in any of the ones I liked. After a while I just decided to jump in and I've been a crazy fandom addict ever since.

I swear if I would've had the courage before I would've been in the FMA fandom SO HARD way back when. Ugh.

I guess my first fandom would have to be Disney animated movies when I was a child (this was back in the 60s/70s.) I would draw stories for The Aristocats and Lady and the Tramp characters with word balloons, and create scenes with stuffed animal versions of the characters.

My first fandom was Yu-Gi-Oh, which was... five years ago, I think? a friend had written some fanfic, and from there I started reading on FFnet and... pretty much never stopped. :D I also find it rather amusing that most people that I've seen write about this before started out reading het and being all *shocked* and *appalled* at the slash before being drawn in themselves - the first story I read was gen. The second one was slash, and from then on I refused to read anything else for about two years, so I had a rather different reaction! :P

To be honest, it never even crossed my mind that there would be YGO-related slash out there. And, amazingly, I don't think I've seen any. LOL.

Do I live under a rock or what?

First fannish experience at all? A Superfriends messageboard and some random Thundercats websites (complete with jokes that seem tame now but were deliciously scandalous to young!me). No interaction from me, just a lot of reading and loling.

First actual interaction: Sailor Moon fandom, when it was all on individual websites -- so much Geocities, Tripod, and Angelfire! I put up a few sites of my own, including lots of amateurish fanart and fics with huge ensemble casts of OCs, and did a tiny bit of emailing with fic authors.

I never managed to stumble into any forums or mailing lists, unfortunately, so I didn't have any sustained interaction or chance for relationship-building until I got into LJ in 2003 to follow hellsing. That led to the habit of looking up new fandoms as I got into them to see what comms were available, and everything else followed from there.
