Let's talk about Homestuck!

SO, I'm a pretty big Homestuck fan. I genuinely enjoy how zany and creative the fandom is, and albeit being a bit on the strange side, I have yet to encounter any so called "obnoxious" fans that I see so many people complaining about. The fans I've come across are all extremely considerate and fun to talk to. I don't know if I'm just always in the right places or what.

Although that racial identity wank explosion last week was pretty bad. I can't rule that out.

Basically, ITT: your opinions on and/or experiences with Homestuck and its fandom.

I think I may have come into the fandom too late to see what you're saying about Kanaya. What was that all about exactly?

Hussie claimed Kanaya was an "unmistakably gay character" and said lesbianism in troll culture is similar to a fetish, because it's an exacting preference, not an opposite one [since trolls are pansexual].

This caused half the fandom to say "Kanaya's not a lesbian, she's pansexual like every other troll!" because in HUMAN culture someone with a foot fetish doesn't have to hook up with someone that also has a foot fetish. While this is somewhat valid, Hussie made the clarification that Kanaya is only interested in women as far as concupiscent quadrants are concerned. People are just being homophobic idiots [since a lot of these people are straight men!] trying to make her "a lesbian that can sleep with guys".

The responses to this Dirk update I'm talking about are saying they think scratch-Earthlings are like trolls in that pansexuality might be the norm. Dirk is gay. You can see where I'm going with this. I love the updates all the same, but the fandom is making me hard to enjoy that since I'm worried about him becoming the new Kanaya.

I'm not exactly *new* to the fandom, but I'll admit I didn't pay attention to it when I first started reading Homestuck. XD No problem.

Well, I thought the racial identity thing was pretty bad, but that has to take the cake honestly. It doesn't make sense to me. When fans say "Kanaya's not a lesbian, she's a pansexual like every other troll" as you stated, it makes me wonder: if their view of TROLLS--a fictional race of aliens--is so normative, then what do they think about humans? That the majority of the human race is "straight," therefore everyone has to be straight? That's probably the most ridiculous and insulting logic you can ever come up with.

I really do not understand fandom sometimes. That's just over-the-top as far as I'm concerned.

That's what I have to say about the whole thing! A lot of Homestucks seem to be unaware of what goes on in fandom completely, and it reeks of "babby's first fandom" for a lot of these people. It seems like whenever something is confirmed by Hussie or by the story, the fandom throws a shit fit.

But I'm glad you've yet to run into anybody like that! It means you've friended/followed the right people, or at least people that stay away from the drama. For a fandom that moves as quickly as this one does, the drama is quite plentiful.

Yeah it's pretty bad. Aren't the majority of Homestucks like, what, 14? Not to bag on age, it's just... that's what I notice on Tumblr. I guess it would explain the issues with headcanon versus canon and whatnot.

Yeah! I feel like Lady Luck just guided me to follow really good people in the fandom. XD I never have any wank on my dash and it's usually full of pretty cool art or really weird gags. The usual fare.

A nice chunk of them are between 13 and 15, yeah. A lot of the idiocy I see can be from people even in their 20's, though, and I can't say I've ever seen some of this behaviour in other fandoms from people of that age.

I wonder what it is about Homestuck specifically that attracts obnoxious fandom-wank types then? That's what I would like to know.

If I had to guess, I'd say it's how Hussie handles the fans and all that.

Hmm, yeah. I can see that. Although I can see why he does in a way... XD It's like rounding up a stampede.
